DDM Sangha Visited Quake-affected Orphanage in Myanmar to Express Loving-care and Prayed for the Deceased Local Monastics
On the noon of April 5th, 2025, the disaster relief team of the Dharma Drum Mountain (DDM) Social Welfare and Charity Foundation (here referred to as "the Foundation") made a special visit to an orphanage in Mandalay founded by Ven. Sayadaw U Sumangala, in order to present disaster supplies and cash supplements to the 180 children and 36 sramaneras (novice monks) that the orphanage accommodates. To send the regards from Ven. Guo Huei (果暉法師), the Abbot President of DDM, and the DDM Sangha to the children and sramaneras, Ven. Chang Xing (常惺法師), Secretary General of the Foundation, put a string of Buddha beads on their wrists one by one and presented them the "Peace and Freedom from Troubles" amulets made of Formosan cypress. He expressed appreciation to Ven. Sayadaw U Sumangala for taking care of the orphaned children, helping them thrive in the compassion and wisdom of Buddhist teachings.
In the afternoon, the disaster relief team of the Foundation headed to the Buddhist Institute of Masoyein Monastery in quake-stricken Mandalay. A building in the Institute collapsed after the powerful earthquake, leading to severe casualties as there were more than 200 monastics taking exams inside the building. In addition to giving daily necessities and cash supplements to the Monastery on behalf of DDM monastic members and lay devotees, Ven. Chang Xing led the disaster relief team to recite the name of Guanyin Bodhisattva with joined palms at the disaster scene, in order to sincerely wish the deceased monastics favorable rebirths and swift return to the saha world in order to fulfill their vows.Ven. Chang Xing said, "More than 200 monastics passed away during the earthquake while taking the exam, which reminds us that impermanence is ever-present and unforeseen tragedies are always regretful. The monastic members taking on hardship and suffering are great bodhisattvas, using their lives as a reminder for us to seize the invaluable human body that allows us to diligently deepen our spiritual cultivation, and learn and practice Buddhist teachings." Dharma Drum Mountain wishes that the deceased monastics continue their monastic vocation in following the Buddha's teachings in their next lives.
