The English Intensive Beginner’s Meditation Class held by DDM International Meditation Group Concludes Successfully, Guiding Participants to Discover Inner Peace and Strength

The 2-Day English Intensive Meditation Class, held from January 3 to 4, 2026 by Dharma Drum Mountain International Meditation Group (IMG) at DDM Yunlai Branch Monastery, concluded with joy and inspiration. Guided entirely in English by Venerable Guo Chii (果啟法師), 74 participants from diverse backgrounds experienced core practices such as sitting meditation, stretching, moving meditation, walking meditation, and the "Water Bowl" practice.
The Water Bowl: A Mirror of the Mind
The "Water Bowl" practice was a highlight for many. Mason from Group 1 shared that he initially felt resistance and frustration when asked to squat or exchange bowls. However, by applying Master Sheng Yen's "Four Steps for Handling a Problem" (Face it, Accept it, Deal with it, Let it go), the anger quickly vanished, leaving behind a profound sense of calm.
A participant from Group 4 described the water in the bowl as a reflection of our heart. Despite external distractions or internal impulses to "spill the water" (symbolizing vexation), she learned to focus step-by-step. By the end of the retreat, she joyfully declared her transformation from an "unhappy person" to a "happy lady," a testament to the transformative power of Chan.
Living in the Present: From Holding a Pen to BreathingMeditation is not just about sitting on a cushion; it is about every moment of life. Isabel from Group 2 noted that we often rush through daily actions without mindfulness. Through the retreat, students learned to bring awareness to simple acts—like picking up a pen or chewing food during eating meditation. As one student realized, it's not about becoming a "new person," but about recognizing our emotions and returning to clarity.
The Power of Group Energy
Many participants' heartfelt sharing revealed how Chan practice can transform vexations into peace and happiness. Many of them were moved by the collective energy of the group. Whether it was the intense focus during the water bowl practice or the synchronized silence after fast walking, the supportive atmosphere made it easier for everyone to settle their minds. Ann from Group 3 highlighted that DDM provides a rare and precious space—especially for English speakers—to review the foundation of meditation and check if their body, mind, and speech are on the right track of benefiting others.
Conclusion: Start Your Chan Journey
In her closing remarks, Venerable Guo Chii encouraged everyone to be their own master. Whether using the method of counting the breath or breath awareness, the key is consistency. She invited students to utilize the DDM Roadmap and App to sustain their practice at home.
Chan meditation is a journey of self-discovery. Whether you seek peace of mind or a way to navigate life's ups and downs, Dharma Drum Mountain welcomes you to experience the gift of the present moment!
