Returning to Stillness: A Quiet Transformation— A 7-day retreat reflection by Helen

I don't remember the last time I truly saw a tree, not just glanced, but really saw it. One afternoon during the retreat, after a period of silence, I stood beneath the leaves as they shimmered like stars, moving gently in the wind. For a moment, the world felt suspended. A deep stillness washed over me, and it was a peace I'd never known. It was quiet and grounding. The usual noise in my mind faded, and the wind on my skin reminded me: I wasn't separate, I was simply here.

Coming back to New York City, I've been slowly learning how to carry that stillness with me. It's not always easy. The city rushes, crowds press in, and my mind spins again. But something has shifted. When it all becomes too much, on a packed train or in the middle of a hard moment, I'd simply close my eyes. I return to that quiet.

I recall the calm voice of Fashi at DDRC. The teachings that gently guide me back to my body. The slow, intentional movement of prostration. The deep peace that was gifted to me by those seven days. It's still here and it always will be. A soft, inner refuge I can return to again and again, even when the world outside is loud or messy. And from that place, I meet the world with more gentleness. Now, walking through the streets, I notice the light a little more. I catch glimpses of joy I used to rush past. I feel more connected, more whole. And most of all, hopeful—like I can keep returning to that still point, letting it slowly shape the way I live. I keep walking. Softly. Awake. Grateful. Content.
